News from these two smaller POJ churches comes from Rev. Carson Rhyne.
Smaller membership congregations have exciting and varied ministries that make a huge impact on both their congregations and surrounding communities.
Recently, Orange Presbyterian Church, celebrated the 50th ordination anniversary of their Covenant Pastor, Rev. Denny Burnett. What began as a church event grew into a community-wide celebration, including roles from both a Baptist and Nazarene pastor. The music facilitator recruited a 20-person choir, and 12 instrumentalists participated in the service. Before the service, the instrumentalists performed a brief concert that ended with “Amazing Grace” played on bagpipes and organ!
Several choir anthems were offered, including one written specifically in honor of Rev. Burnett’s ordination. The full sanctuary celebrated not only his calling, but the calling of every person there as a disciple of Jesus Christ. It was an uplifting and inspiring gathering.
Another example comes from Gayton Kirk, which hosted a Summertime Tea Party. Fine food, good entertainment, and a refreshing atmosphere were enjoyed by all 50 participants. Hats were encouraged, yet white gloves were not required!
This delightful afternoon was enjoyed by all who attended, with good music, a relaxed pace, and genuine fellowship—a fitting and meaningful summer experience. It also raised over $5,000 for the church.
These two examples show how smaller membership congregations bless their own members and their communities. They are uplifting and faithful ways to be the church of Jesus Christ.
